UnderGround Forums Dominick Reyes: Jon Jones' boxing is his weakness

During Wednesday's UFC 247 blue corner athlete panel, Saturday's light heavyweight title challenger Dominick Reyes was asked by a fan how he intends to exploit Bones' "poor offensive and defensive boxing."

"It's no secret that Jon isn't the best boxer in the UFC," replied Reyes, as transcribed by Nolan King for MMA Junkie. "He's a great kickboxer. He has great range. He uses his kicks very well, but he's not the best boxer. I intend to exploit that. ... I think my boxing is probably the best in the division. With footwork and fearlessness, I'll get in there and put these hands on him."

Well it's a good thing then it's not a boxing fight and Jon Jones can use elbows, kicks, knees, takedowns, ground and pound and whatever the hell else he wants.

That will be exactly why Reyes said it. Jones loves fighting his opponents at their game

This. He always studies his opponents so much that he ends up fighting like them or at least uses some of the signature moves his opponents use.

His boxing is his weakness, but what is that saying?  His boxing is so minute in his game that it doesn't matter.  His ability to keep distance will keep the majority of fighters away no matter how "weak" his boxing is.  I like Reyes and he has to be confident but I don't see this going his way.  I do like his confidence though. He's not overboard with it like rampage and he's not underwhelmed either.  We'll see what happens.

haha

-once you get past the 8-foot high electric fence, you can gain access to the property relatively easily.

-how are we going to get over that borderline impassable electric fence?

-by using bravery.

-ah. ok.

It's unbelievable how many people aren't giving Reyes a chance. Jones is a great fighter, but that's it. He's no immortal man. He's going to eventually lose like everyone else does. He's already come close a few times to losing. And so far Reyes is undefeated. I think he definitely has a lot better chance than people are giving him.

Anderson was shooting TAKEDOWNS on Murray!

Nigga please!

He also dropped Murray with a jab and rocked him on the feet. He was shooting takedowns because he could. Because he could do whatever he wanted
Except finish him <img src="/images/phone/apple.png" alt="Phone Post" border="0" style="vertical-align:middle;"/>

He finished Murrays career
Or prison did Phone Post

Jones will not lose to Dominick Reyes it's no way possible unless he turns it into a brawl and gets lucky..

I think it's 50/50 here. Jones is creeping up to the end of prime and diminishing of chin. Reyes has an innate ability to connect on people and knock them down. As good as Jones is, Reyes is a big dude too and he has his own big reach. Something tells me that Dom is going to be a lot different. There will be fireworks.

He's right though, Jones has many holes in his boxing; particularly in his defense.

That's why he's so good with his reach.

Remember a few years back I think it was before he fought Gus that he was saying he could outbox Klitchko? I think Reyes is trying to goad Jones into boxing with him. And with as great of fighter as Jones is, his defense at boxing range is look away and run. But it's not surprising when he has fought either at distance or in the clinch for so long. I think Reyes stands a better chance than people are giving him. Fully aware I could be wrong. Also how many people gave Gus a shot the first time?! Honestly the promo for that fight was they were both tall.

I got Reyes by Tko in the first or second round.

If it goes past two rounds Jones gets him to the ground and finds a finish.

If Reyes stays standing with Jones he catches Jons chin eventually

No doubt Reyes has the power to hurt anyone with a clean shot but what exactly have you seen to suggest *Jon's chin is diminishing?

Honestly all he has to do is catch him on an exit. Watch how Jones disengages when he goes to reset his distance. It's laughable. But again to be fair his size has allowed him to get away with it for so long.

Thiago Santos tried to capitalize on this with flurries during breaks.  He clipped jon a few times but unfortunately with Thiagos knee getting fucked he wasnt able to persue much. I dont know if it would have mattered though, because as you say the reach allows jones to get away with things that would otherwise get someone knocked out.
